They say it takes years to become an overnight success, and in the case of rising star Ama Qamata, nothing could be closer to the truth. To many of us, the 22-year-old actress appears to have become an overnight sensation, thanks to the success of Netflix’s Blood & Water, in which she stars.
However, Qamata has actually been honing her skills since the tender age of 10, when she was cast in her primary school play as Snow White. At 16 years old, she started acting professionally, landing her first major television gig on SABC1’s My Perfect Family. In 2013 she also featured in a BBC drama series, but it was her turn as Puleng on Netflix’s runaway hit that made the world really sit up and take notice.
We caught up with the actress to hear what makes her tick.
What's the first thing you do in the morning? I check my phone – terrible habit.
What is your personal mantra? “Walk by faith, not by sight.”
Where is the best place to collect your thoughts? Anywhere, as long as there is silence and I’m alone.
If you weren’t afraid, what would you do? I would probably date a rapper. I’m just kidding!
What would you never be caught wearing in public? When it comes to clothes and fashion I don’t believe you should limit yourself. I would wear anything if I genuinely felt good in it.
What’s the best gift you’ve ever received? I received letters from my friends and family on my 18th birthday. I am a sucker for sentimental gifts, so this made me cry like a baby.
What’s the worst lie you ever told? I don’t lie. I know people who say this usually are lying but I literally cannot lie.
If you could pause any moment in your life, which moment would it be? When I saw Beyoncé live, that day was just perfect. And working with Adidas on their new campaign was a dream. I almost jumped off a cliff when I received my Beyoncé Ivy Park drop.
What makes you grumpy? Everything and anything. I have the worst mood swings.
What personal feature are you most insecure about? Personally, I don’t have any. I got over my insecurities.
What does the world need more of? The world needs more people like [fellow actress] Khosi [Ngema]. I literally spent the whole day with her [a few days ago], and it was amazing. She is so real, sweet and such a great person to experience. My problems don’t matter when I’m around her. I think the world needs that.
