Miss Universe Zozibini Tunzi has joined the fight against gender-based violence, taking part in the viral TikTok My Body, Stand Up challenge.

The challenge seems to stem from the new GBV song which was released this week, in partnership with 1st for Women Insurance, performed by Gigi Lamayne, Lira, GoodLuck's Juliet Harding and Mariechan.

The song is a reboot of a popular song produced in 1983 and taught in schools around the world as part of a sexual abuse prevention programme. It samples the original song by educational psychologist Peter Alsop, and teaches about themes such as consent and boundaries.

The song is aimed at not only teaching young girls about consent when it comes to their bodies but also to raise funds to fight women abuse in the country, an issue that has been dubbed a “second pandemic”.

Taking to the video-sharing app, Tunzi joined the call to action, urging people to stand up to woman abuse and play their part in society.

Tunzi is an ambassador against GBV on the African continent. She was appointed by President Cyril Ramaphosa earlier this year when he was appointed as the chairperson of the AU.

Tunzi's ongoing work against GBV started back in August 2019, when she was crowned Miss SA.

The night she was crowned, Tunzi said: “We have absolutely no reason to keep smiling because the country's women are dying every day and mostly people are doing nothing about it. It is not up to us; it’s up to perpetrators to start doing right.”

So far, the challenge's hashtag #MyBodyStandup has garnered more than 1.4 million views on the app.

Some of the names that have taken part by busting a move to the song include the rapper Gigi and TikTok sensations such as Justin De Nobrega, Kelsey Maggott, Matthew J Power, Witney Ramabulana, Mpho Mudau and Shawnee Reid, to name a few.
