Siko Republik is a Brand SA-endorsed athleisure brand that features a signature Nguni-print and was created with the African body shape in mind.
“2017 was a very tough year for me, so I spent most of my time at the gym, literally two to three hour sessions at times on a daily basis,” Gwala says. “I wanted to start dressing the part [and] started shopping about for gym gear and realised that there was nothing in the market with the African aesthetic.”
Gwala says being a small, female-owned business had its challenges, but she was determined to manufacture the range of active wear locally and create jobs in the process. But the manufacturing of active wear requires a specialised skill set and machinery.

“Finding the Right manufacturing partner was tough — we almost threw in the towel. The brand celebrated two years in November and we are starting to see the demand come through at the level that we need to deliver profitability.”
The Siko Republik range is primarily made in KwaZulu-Natal and Johannesburg. While they do not yet manufacture their own material, Gwala says that this is on the cards as sustainability is part of their business plan.
Since launching with the Queen Nandi range, the brand has evolved significantly, adding swimwear, street wear, tracksuits, a children range and even masks to their range.
Due to a strong demand, they will be launching a men’s wear range this month. Future plans include categories outside athleisure wear, and hopefully a few collaborations.
As to the secret for starting a successful business, Gwala says you need to be clear as to why you’re starting your business, show commitment and know your strengths and weaknesses. “Wake up every day and chose to find new ways to grow your business. You will make mistakes, but fail fast and fail forward.”
