Netball SA (NSA) has postponed its activities for two weeks following President Cyril Ramphosa's announcement to move the country to lockdown level 4.
SA will host the first International Netball Federation (INF) World Cup in Cape Town in 2023.
Tournaments and activities affected include the Twizza Netball Club Championships and the Telkom Junior Netball Championships in the under-17, under-18 and under-19 age groups.
The championships were approaching their conclusion before they were postponed to October. “We decided to close down on all netball activities in the country until the 14 days that the president has declared.
"We will make a call after two weeks and take it from there. It is about the people's lives and people's lives matter. It is about our safety, and we would love to encourage everybody to stay at home and be safe. I urge the players to train by themselves and not to take chances. Stay at home and only go out when you have to," said NSA president Cecilia Molokwane.
Last year, Molokwane contracted the virus and spent two weeks in isolation. She described that period as the darkest in her life. “I have been there and know what I am talking about. This thing [virus] is real and it kills. Let us adhere to the rules and regulations ... stay safe rather than sorry," she added.
