Luthando Jack says the board of Boxing SA is relieved and excited that finally there is a National Boxing Promoters Association structure’s national executive committee.
It comprises five members. There are additional members – one will head the communications department, branding and marketing, while the other will be in charge of the stakeholder engagements and business.
The seven-member team – put in place during the promoters elective conference at Garden Court Hotel, Mhlanga in Durban on Saturday evening – will be at the helm for the next three years.
“It went very well and I can safely say it was a beautiful session,” said Jack, who together with his colleagues gathered at the hotel, where licensees had a two-day convention which ended on Friday. It was a precursor to the promoters elective conference, which went on until the wee hours of yesterday.
“We are excited that finally we have a national promoters structure to engage with; it is long overdue. About 70 promoters around the country descended to the city of banana, where this gathering took place.
“They engaged amongst themselves and adopted a constitution. They then elected the structure,” said Jack. “We also engaged about issues of norms and standards; professional development; readiness to host excellent tournaments that deserve to be on air.
"Remember, the SABC is coming back and will provide television dates. The department of sports in KwaZulu- Natal was part of the gathering; we are happy.”
Veteran award-winning promoter Ayanda Matiti of the Xaba Promotions and Events, which is based in East London, was elected chairperson, while Lebo Mahoko, whose Dream Team is the only active boxing promotion in the Free State, will serve as Matiti’s deputy.
Zandile Malinga, who trades under the banner of Starline Boxing Promotion that is based in Durban, was elected secretary. Her deputy is Phathutshedzo Dongola, the Limpopo-based former professional boxer, who promotes under Champions Boxing Promotion.
Khaya Majeke – vastly-experienced sports administrator who promotes under KM Sport – is treasurer, while newcomer and successful businessman Jacob Mnisi of J4Joy International Promoter was elected head of stakeholder engagements. Janie Hebler of Fifth Elements is head of communications, branding and marketing.
