Nomvelo Magcaba has committed to doing even better in her concerted effort to revive boxing in KwaZulu-Natal with the production of champions in that province which was once one of the top four that boasted super champions.

The list includes Elijah “Tap Tap” Makhathini, Thulani “Sugar Boy” Malinga and Moruti “Baby Face” Mthalane.

Magcaba is a former professional boxer from Mkhambathini where she was trained by her uncle Alex Mchunu whose son Thabiso “The Rock” Mchunu and holds the SA cruiserweight title.

She was on Friday night crowned by Boxing SA for her good intentions, hard work and dedication with the most aspiring promoter of 2023.

“This is just the beginning – more is still to come,” said Magcaba whose Mvelo Boxing Promotion staged the last fight for former two-times IBF and flyweight champion Mthalane at Pietemaritzburg City Hall on October 2 last year.

It was Mthalane’s 42nd professional fight, and only his seventh at home. Mthalane, 40, chalked his 39th win, and announced his retirement from the sport he had served with distinction for almost 25 years.

“I am very happy for this award, I promise to work harder to put the sport of boxing in another level in our province, my wish is to help our province produce champions,”

There are only two national champions in KZN right now, Prince Dlomo and Mchunu.

Dlomo from Pietermaritzburg will put his junior welterweight belt in line against Marcus “King Labamba” Lebogo in Magcaba’s tournament in Pietermartizburg.
