Following Mamelodi Sundowns’ blunder of including suspended Tebogo Langerman in the match-day squad that beat Bloemfontein Celtic 1-0 in the Nedbank Cup final almost two weeks ago, Sihle Ndebele reflects on some of the prominent administration oversights that cost Premier Soccer League (PSL) clubs dearly in recent seasons
Ajax Cape Town relegated after three-match forfeiture
To date, Ajax are still campaigning in the second-tier as a result of the mistake of fielding ineligible Tendai Ndoro. In May 2018, Safa arbitrator William Mokhari ruled that the Urban Warriors forfeit three games, losing all of them 3-0 and fined R50,000 for each offence after using Ndoro in these games. The Zimbabwe international had already played for Orlando Pirates and for Saudi Arabian club al-Faisaly in the same season, meaning he was not supposed to play for Ajax.
AmaZulu docked six points for defying Fifa rules
In September 2018, AmaZulu were docked six points after Fifa’s disciplinary committee (DC) found them guilty for failing to comply with a decision passed by Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) on September 13 2017 that they pay Namibian player Phinheas Nambandi an amount in the region of R1m, having terminated his contract without following regulations. On top of the six-point deduction, Usuthu also paid Nambandi R1m at the end.
Kaizer Chiefs transfer ban
As things stand, Chiefs are forced to keep even their most underperforming players because they are not allowed to sign new players. This is after Amakhosi were handed a two-window transfer ban by Fifa after they were found to have illegally signed Madagascan international Dax Andrianarimanana, who was contracted to Fosa Juniors in 2018. Chiefs are now waiting for CAS appeal outcome after the matter was heard two weeks ago.
Sundowns and defender Wayne Arendse flouted rules
In April last year, the PSL disciplinary committee found Sundowns and defender Wayne Arendse guilty of misconduct after the defender was drafted in as a late addition to the team sheet after he’d been originally left out of the match-day squad against Bidvest Wits in October 2018.
He was called from the stands to take up a place in the match-day squad. The club and the player were fined R250,000 each, with half of the fine suspended.
