He may not have been part of the SA Under-23 training camp preparing for the Tokyo Olympics in July, but TS Galaxy defender Macbeth Mahlangu remains hopeful that he will still be part of the games.

The 19-year-old has been impressive for Galaxy this season, having featured 16 times in all competitions. But he was not selected for the training squad held in Durban last week.

The Olympics will run from July 23 to August 8, and a final squad will be submitted on July 1.

“I still believe I can make it. That’s what pushed me and I played the way I have been playing because I want to go to the Olympics and I will be happy if I can be part of the team,” Mahlangu told the club media department.

“It is something I wish for and I believe if I can continue playing the way I have been doing, I will make the final cut. It pushes me to work even harder and I believe my hard work will be rewarded soon.”

The defender is also pleased with the performance he has been dishing at the Rockets under coach Owen da Gama, but feels he can still improve.

“I’m happy to be playing the way I have been. It is what I needed from long ago since I started playing. I told myself that I wanted to play many games and the feeling is great now that I’m playing, but I need to continue working hard.”

With the Rockets looking to have recovered from their slow start this season, Mahlangu said the hard work they have been putting in at training is paying off and they need to continue working hard.

“I think the hard work and applying our minds have been helping us recently. If we continue working the way we’ve been doing, we can finish in the top eight. We are happy that we have been getting good results so far and we hope to continue with that.”
