Mamelodi Sundowns captain Denis Onyango is on a mission to break the record for most clean sheets in a season.
Former Orlando Pirates goalkeeper and AmaZulu assistant coach Moeneeb Josephs holds the record with 17 clean sheets in 28 games set in the 2009-10 season.
Last season, former Ugandan international Onyango kept 15 clean sheets in 25 matches to win the Premiership goalkeeper of the season award.
Onyango, 36, has already kept three clean sheets in three games this season and he is targeting 20 to break the long-standing record.
The Tshwane giants have not conceded in four matches, and Onyango believes they can go the whole season unbeaten and clinch their fifth successive league title.
Sundowns will play against Pirates in the pick of the weekend's league matches at the Orlando Stadium in Soweto on Saturday at 3pm.
“So far, so good. I am happy with my performance between the sticks. However, I will not rest until I break Moeneeb’s record of clean sheets. I did not finish the season due to a broken finger, and I pray that I stay injury-free this season. Retirement from the national team will allow me to have more rest and recovery and play more games. I have more time to focus on the club, and I aim to play as many matches as I can,” said Onyango.
The former African Goalkeeper of the Year award recipient described their game against Pirates as their biggest test.
“It is a mouth-watering fixture and an acid test for us. Pirates are the team that could test us. We prepared well and we're confident of getting a fourth league win of the season. It is a tough encounter. We are focused on the game and we could set the tone by winning the game of the weekend,” he said.
Sundowns completed the league double over Pirates last season.
“The key to winning the game is our rock-solid defence and our ability to press the opposition,” added Onyango.
