UK-based rapper and songwriter Ntantu is commemorating the passing of iconic musician and humanitarian Miriam Makeba with the release of the song Far Away that features the legend.

Far Away is a remix of Makeba’s popular song Baxabene Ooxam, which is available in all digital platforms.

It commemorates the legend who died on November 9 while performing in Italy 13 years ago.

The song will be part of Ntantu’s upcoming album that will be released next year in the UK.

Speaking to Sowetan from his home in the UK, Ntantu, who was born in Kinshasa in Democratic Republic of Congo and lived in Cape Town, was over the moon that his wish has come true.

“I am excited and looking forward to the reaction of SA audience to the song. I feel honoured to have been associated with the work of one of the greatest music icons in Africa.”

Ntantu, whose real name is David Ntantu, said when he came across a video of the song online, he had been toying around with an idea with his producer to tap into his culture and roots.

Having grown up listening to music of artists like Yvonne Chaka Chaka and Brenda Fassie, Ntantu was looking for soulful sound from one of the legends.

“I sold my producer this idea of doing something from the three legends and he liked it. When we came across the video of Miriam performing the song, it just resonated with me. I did not understand the lyrics but I just fell in love with it and its vibe. We consulted with her recording company for the rights. While working on it we tried to find something that will bring the song to life.

“Miriam is a legend, and the purpose was to find someone who is so iconic like her. I don’t understand the lyrics but I just love the energy and soulfulness in the song. I got to learn about her contribution to the music industry while working on the song. She has really left a mark and rich legacy.”

In his upcoming album, Ntantu said he decided to go back to his roots and music that he grew up listening to.

“This is basically a journey of growth from when I was a teenager to adulthood and present day. It is me tapping into my roots and looking at things that influences me.”

Rob Cowling of Gallo Music Publishers said: “Gallo has had a long-standing relationship with the late Dr Miriam Makeba, including representing many popular songs she performed over the years, like Olilili, Click Song, Into Yam and Ntyilo Ntyilo.

"I had the pleasure of meeting and working with Mazi [Makeba] 22 years ago for the Homeland album and with her being named a UN Goodwill ambassador around the time, and experienced first-hand her kindness, generosity and humanitarian advice. One can only admire her spirit and look on as her work continues through the likes of the Miriam Makeba Foundation and the Makeba Centre for Girls.

"We commemorate the life of Mama Africa and our thoughts go out today to her family and friends. Let’s remember the spirit of ubuntu on this day and celebrate Ma Miriam in showing unity, respect and kindness towards others.”
