A Nelson Mandela Bay UDM leader was shot dead outside a barber shop in Motherwell, Gqeberha, after stepping outside to answer a phone call, Eastern Cape police said.
Luxolo Namette, 44, was allegedly shot twice in the head by an unknown gunman at about 3.44pm on Saturday in Umnulu Street, NU 9, Motherwell.
SAPS Eastern Cape spokesperson Brig Nobuntu Gantana said police were conducting patrols in the area when they received a report of murder.
Upon arrival, officers spoke to the deceased’s sister.
“It is alleged that the deceased, Luxolo Namette, 44 years old, was at a local barber shop when he received a phone call. He stepped outside to answer the call, and an unknown suspect shot him twice in the head. He fell to his knees and succumbed to his injuries at the scene. He sustained two gunshot wounds to the head,” said Gantana.
The scene was also attended by senior police leadership led by Eastern Cape police commissioner Lt-Gen Vuyisile Ncata alongside forensic and pathology officials.
Police recovered cartridges, ear pods and two cellphones at the scene.
Gantana said the suspect was still unknown, the motive for the killing had not yet been established and no arrests had yet been made.
Ncata condemned the killing. “This senseless killing has no place in our communities, and we will not rest until those responsible are brought to book. I urge every resident who saw or heard anything to come forward because community information is critical to ensuring justice for Luxolo Namette and his family.”
