There were scenes of excitement, tears of joy and group hugs at Curtis Nkondo School of Specialisation in Soweto as matric pupils collected their results on Friday.

Dressed casually and taking selfies as they sang songs of joy, dozens of Curtis Nkondo 2021 matrics came out in their numbers at the school in the morning to celebrate their results.

The school obtained a 94,4% 2021 matric pass rate, a slight drop from the 95,5% they achieved in 2020.

Close friends Siziwe Mnwana, Thenjiwe Ndhlovu and Zinhle Mokhema, all aged 18, achieved a combined eight distinctions between them.

“I had a feeling I will get three or four distinctions. I got what I wanted. This is a beautiful feeling. I got the newspaper this morning around 1am to check my results. I am happy,” said a jubilant Mnwana.

“We really put a lot of effort into our school work. We are proud of our results,” said Ndhlovu.

“I really don't know what to say. I am speechless. I can't express my excitement,” said Mokhema.

One of the school's top performers Nomali Shange, 18, who bagged six distinctions, commended her family and teachers for the support they gave her. Her highest mark is 92% in Accounting.

“My family, aunts, grade 12 teachers were so amazing. They pushed us and gave us attention. I am still in disbelief. I thank God,” said Shange.

School principal Lindiwe Ndzala said: “I have mixed emotions. I am excited. We just a bit concerned about the drop.”
