Netting three goals from the first four DStv Premiership games hasn’t influenced Stellenbosch striker Judas Moseamedi to cast aside the club’s collective ambition to finish in the top-five in favour of fighting to win the Golden Boot.
Moseamedi, who completed his shock switch to Stellenbosch from Maritzburg United before the season started, is currently a joint Premiership top-scorer alongside Chibuike Ohizu of Sekhukhune United and Royal AM’s Victor Letsoalo.
“I haven’t thought of challenging or trying to win the leading scorer award because my plan is to help the club finish in a top position this season. Yes, individually, it would be nice to get more goals this season but I don’t have an exact target of goals this season as I am more focused on helping the team succeed,’’ Moseamedi told Sowetan.
“I would be happy if we can finish in the top-five this season… that would really make me happy because it’s a team’s goal. Obviously, we need to show it on the field that we want it. I trust that we’ll achieve that top-five goal, given the quality we have in the team.”
Moseamedi, 27, conceded being no stranger to living in the Mother City, having played for Cape Town City between 2018 and 2019, made it easier for him to settle in quicker at Stellies.
“I think the fact that I stayed in Cape Town before made everything simpler for me in terms of adapting to the club structures,’’ said the Stellenbosch striker.
On his rather unceremonious exit from Maritzburg, the lad from Tzaneen in Limpopo disclosed the Team of Choice made him aware when they started their pre-season that he wasn’t in coach Ernst Middendorp’s plans. Stellies’ Leletu Skelem went the opposite direction.
“From the start of the pre-season, it was made clear that it’s not going to be easy for me to get game time at the club because of the way coach Middendorp wanted to play, so I was just waiting for that day and I was lucky to end up here at Stellies,’’ Moseamedi reflected.
