Colin “Nomakanjani” Nathan has joined a list of several prominent boxing personalities who have had their sons join them as trainers or managers, creating successful, often intense, family-run teams.

Nathan this week announced that 20-year-old Daniel has renewed his manager’s licence with Boxing SA, making him one of the youngest-ever licensed boxing managers in SA.

“I feel that the time has come to bring someone who can help me with fighter relations,” said 48-year-old Nathan, who doubles up as a trainer.

“I said in the past that I didn’t want to bring my family into this sport because of all the bullshit that I have been through.

“But it’s also an industry where it’s very difficult to trust people, and who is better than someone close to me whom I love and trust?

“Daniel still needs to complete his BCom while at varsity, but I would like to slowly mentor him and know that I can turn to him if I need help.”

Daniel, who was brought up watching boxing and going to matches from a young age, said: “It’s really cool I get to work with my dad. I got to work in the corner with him, and I feel like this is kind of a level up.”

His father, at the age of 12, was the youngest registered “bucket boy” to work in the corner for his father, Stan Nathan, owner of the Sea Point Boxing Gym in Cape Town.

At 20, Nathan became the youngest boxing commentator in SA, and at 22, he became the youngest South African to own a boxing gym — the Hot Box Gym in Johannesburg.

Examples of sons who joined their fathers in managing or training boxing careers include Floyd Mayweather Jr and Floyd Mayweather Sr; Chris Eubank Jr and Chris Eubank; Marvis Frazier and Joe Frazier; and Tyson Fury and John Fury.

Nathan’s No Doubt management looks after many successful boxers, including Bernice “The Badger” Ferreira, who will oppose Malawian Adidya Mimu for the vacant IBO junior lightweight world title at the Wild Coast Casino on April 25.

That fight will be staged by promoter Terry-Anne Hart of Fighters Club Promotions.
