Visiting a traditional healer for the first time is likely to be an unfamiliar and intimidating experience. Applying these easy and helpful tips can make you more prepared for your consultation, allowing you to get the most out of it.

Be aware of energy

In African spirituality, healing has a lot to do with the connection of energies and ancestors. Hence, it is important to pay attention to the energy you get from various healers and be aware of what your soul naturally gravitates towards. This will help you choose which healer is best suited for your needs. Your ancestors communicate with you through energy and they will never lead you astray.

Consult your ancestors first

Before you go to any healer, ask your ancestors to lead the way. Your consultation is as much dependent on you as it is on the healer. You can’t just suck your thumb and decide you’re going to a particular healer. You also cannot go purely based on referral. Ask your ancestors to show you who they feel comfortable sharing their secrets with and you will be led accordingly.

Stay calm

Meditating by yourself at home before the consultation can be very advantageous. Pray about your consultation and ask for divinity, truth and information that will help grow your spirit in whichever direction you will be led. Once you have meditated and spoken life into your consultation, remain calm in the belief that your ancestors are lighting and leading the way, revealing everything you need to know. Staying calm throughout the consultation will help you get the most out of it.

Keep an open mind

Know that you are building a relationship with your ancestors and that you may be held accountable for past or present occurrences in your life. Precious family secrets may also be revealed to you. Keep an open mind and understand that certain things may be required of you, such as changing a certain path or performing a ceremony.

Be fully present

Try your best to remain present throughout the consultation. Refrain from recording the session as this may distract you from giving your undivided attention. Ask questions where necessary and affirm your truth when requested to. By agreeing to a certain scenario which the sangoma is explaining, you give the go-ahead for the ancestors to continue narrating your truth.
